Anthony’s Pasta Bar: A Guru Review
After hearing all kinds of stories about Anthony’s Pasta Bar in Hanover Square, I figured it was about time the Guru paid a visit. It was around 7:00 p.m. midweek when I finally went to the small, modern and welcoming restaurant. Hanover Square often feels so nondescript, but the black awning with “Anthony’s” scrawled in big white letters gives the spot character. Anthony’s was fairly busy–the perfect time to stop in for a review.

Let’s face it, Chinese food in ‘Cuse is about as ubiquitous as it comes. There are more Chinese take-out places per square mile than anything else and the food is often substandard, consisting of canned ingredients and pre-made sauces warmed in a microwave. This hyper-Americanized form of “ethnic cuisine” is available everywhere and while so much of it is abysmal, there are in fact a few places that get it right–case and point, Oriental Star in Fayetteville.

The nice weather’s back so I figured it was a perfect opportunity for an affordable, outdoor dinner at the iconic Liverpool hot dog joint Heid’s. For the most part, a hot dog is a hot dog but I still wanted to get a review up for you. You can’t go to Heid’s expecting more than a couple dogs, fries and maybe a birch beer (my favorite) but sometimes it just hits the spot. It’s a no frills, American dining experience that is always quite enjoyable–even though this was my first visit in about a year (thanks Foursquare).

One Syracuse restaurant that’s been undergoing a bunch of changes lately is bc. From the revamped interior, new Fayette Street signage and tweaked menu to a new concept of identity–they’ve been hard at work. A while back I wrote an article on bc’s reopening and heard about the restaurant’s renewed attitude about food, atmosphere and more so I thought I’d go see what all that actually means when it comes to dining at bc Restaurant.

Fresh off of a dinner at Pallo Gallo Mexican restaurant in Fayetteville, I figured I’d provide some of my reactions in this Guru Review. In my other reviews of Mexican food in Syracuse, I’ve made it known that I’m very particular about it. I’m always on the search for the real thing, so I was happy to try Papa Gallo again. I’ve always been a fan of any and all Mexican food that utilizes seafood so I almost always order either fish tacos or a fish burrito. Luckily Papa Gallo does both–and as I found out–executes with precision when it comes to the Pescado Burrito.

The most well established and consistent steakhouse in Syracuse didn’t get there by trying to please everyone. You won’t find exotic menu items or a long list of pasta dishes that many lesser places in town might tout. You also won’t see labels on all the items–grass-fed, free range, etc. Instead what you get are no-nonsense, arguably perfected steakhouse classics and seafood served simply with sides like jasmine rice, baked potato, or the delicious roasted garlic and rosemary smashed potatoes (many more).

To be honest, I’ve been wanting to try Koto Japanese Steakhouse since the first one opened on Erie Boulevard. As a sushi addict there are only a few places I enjoy in Syracuse so I was banking on Koto to help me out. Known for a huge menu of unique sushi rolls, classics and a surprising amount of Japanese cuisine including full hibachi, I was pretty excited to eat there two nights ago, albeit at Carousel Mall. “Why not?” I thought, as mouth-watering aromas wafted into the mall food court (that’s probably a first).

I did a recent review of Syracuse Thai restaurant Lemon Grass last week but just had to get one in for Bangkok Thai Restaurant, a place I love (there’s your spoiler). This may take the form of a long list of reasons I’m constantly making the drive to Liverpool but I’ll remain true to what I set out to do–provide honest Syracuse restaurant reviews. I may have mentioned that Lemon Grass has my favorite Thai cuisine in Syracuse, but blow for blow, Bangkok Thai Restaurant might just top it–at half the price.
