The Sherwood Inn: A Guru Review

As I’ve found since I started reviewing restaurants, it isn’t often that every aspect of a dining experience comes together to create something special. You often find excellent food in hole in the wall type places that haven’t been redecorated since the 70s, while some high-end, modern joints may leave you disappointed. There are very few constants in the world of restaurants, but I like to look at the entire experience when it comes to providing thoughtful reviews. This brings us to The Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles.

‘Cuse Street Food: El Greko Traditional Gyros To Go.

Had a chance to stop by El Greko (629 West Fayette) to chat with my friend Demetrios Tsimis and enjoy an incredibly good, downright gourmet gyro. Tsimis is the visionary behind the tiny, authentic Greek to-go spot (essentially a large grill and a tent) that you may have noticed last year when it was operating out of The Redhouse’s small parking lot. Well now he’s struck out on his own–grabbing up a prime location on West Fayette Street.

Lent Fish Fry: St. Vincent De Paul

You’ve only got a few more weeks as Lent draws to a close but here’s something you should check out. There are many churches in the Syracuse area offering delicious and affordable weekly Friday fish fries to help people stick to Lent. Whether or not you practice Lent (in one of its many forms), we can all agree on fried haddock with a side of homemade mac & cheese. As the Guru I decided to investigate and went to St. Vincent De Paul’s on Friday, March 16th and discovered just how much fun Lent can be.

Bangkok Thai Restaurant in Liverpool: A Guru Review.

I did a recent review of Syracuse Thai restaurant Lemon Grass last week but just had to get one in for Bangkok Thai Restaurant, a place I love (there’s your spoiler). This may take the form of a long list of reasons I’m constantly making the drive to Liverpool but I’ll remain true to what I set out to do–provide honest Syracuse restaurant reviews. I may have mentioned that Lemon Grass has my favorite Thai cuisine in Syracuse, but blow for blow, Bangkok Thai Restaurant might just top it–at half the price.

bc Restaurant’s Nip/Tuck

The dedicated team at bc Restaurant was hard at work on their renovation project when I stopped by to chat with managing partner Ellen Leahy. As some of you may know, the restaurant closed down for what they’ve termed as a “face lift”–updating decor, installing an absolutely huge hardwood floor, organizing back of house and even tweaking the very materials on which the new, improved menu will be printed on.

Tokyo Seoul: A Guru Review

While I have many different favorite foods the only one I’m confident that I could eat everyday is sushi. Something about the intricate work that goes into each piece (if you’re at the right place, that is) and the simplicity of flavor always pleases me, no matter how many times I eat a Spicy Salmon Roll. I’ve been into sushi for years now and I’m always willing to try a new place, but this article is on one of my old favorites.

Mesa Grande Taqueria in Auburn: A Guru Review

Proof that if you built it–and call it Mexican food–they will come, Mesa Grande Taqueria in Auburn was an unexpected disappointment. Having stopped in Auburn to pick up a Christmas gift I figured I’d try the sparse, modern-looking taco joint with the giant green neon lights which give 100 Genesee Street a radioactive glow (must be good, right?). The place is definitely unique in Auburn and I was extremely excited to find it as I’m always up for a burrito.
