VersuS: Attention All Artists!
I’ve been recently investigating the burgeoning local art scene, which seems just slightly outside of the collective Syracuse consciousness. There’s a new venue for art known as VersuS and the dedicated team behind it is looking for any and all local artists to submit work in order to join in. It’s a unique, grassroots and definitely homegrown movement that seemed worth sharing. Read more to find out how to submit!

There’s no denying that Syracuse and the greater Upstate New York area played host to major events in history. Whether you look at women’s suffrage or abolitionism, the Underground Railroad, our history as the 19th century’s largest US salt producer or even the Erie Canal it is quite obvious that CNY played a major role in the development of America as we understand it today. One thing I tend to forget is the sheer number of inventions that originated here, and that’s what Patently Syracuse is all about.

Again The Everson Museum of Art brings an absolutely awesome exhibit featuring the work of American painter Robert Henri. It’s called From New York to Corrymore: Robert Henri and Ireland and features work produced between the years of 1913 and 1928, the years of Henri’s first and last visits to Ireland, respectively. Included in the amazing oil painting exhibit are portraits of early to mid 20th century Irish people as well as landscapes.

Going on now until January 31st the Onondaga Historical Association plays host to cool traveling exhibit called “The Landmarks of New York”. It includes 90 black and white photos of New York City buildings, all of which have been granted official landmark status. It’s free and open to the public. Along with the main exhibit–which is actually the fifth edition–there will be 20 supplemental black and white photos featuring Onondaga County Landmarks. It’s a pretty cool way to bridge the gap between NYC and Syracuse.

Because it’s a bit of a slow week event-wise in Syracuse I’ve decided to do another art related piece. Starting December 1st until March 18th, head to the SUArt Galleries to see the amazing, minimal work of Cuban artist Emilio Sanchez. He’s an extremely well-known artist who spent his career creating beautiful, vivid and occasionally abstract work featuring buildings, houses and other structures. The paintings are all similar in that they have strong, defined lines and a delightful color palette.

I decided to give myself a pass and write another article on a great artist whose work is currently on exhibit in Syracuse. Why? Because I can. Right now at The Warehouse Gallery at Syracuse University’s downtown design headquarters you can see amazing, intricate and stunning ink and brush paintings by Chinese artist Deng Guo Yuan. While I’m sure some have heard of him, here’s something you might not know–this 3 venue tour is his FIRST solo museum exhibition in the United States.

I like doing features on various art exhibits in Syracuse and I’m in luck because there’s constantly something new to check out. Whether it comes through the Everson, SU or a smaller gallery it seems like Syracuse is becoming a much more art-friendly environment. Not only that, but we also tend to get big names–here’s a great example. On exhibit now until January at the SUArt Galleries is a selection of sculptures, drawings and paintings by the famous and well respected sculptor Robert Stackhouse.

I know my article on Alec Soth just went up this morning, and you haven’t had a chance to get to the Everson yet but I needed to let you know about this lecture before it sells out. On top of having this awesome exhibit, the Everson is hosting a lecture by Alec Soth on Friday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. For just $20 (general admission) or $10 (student with school ID) you can see Alec Soth give what promises to be a great lecture.
