Local Theatre: VPA Drama’s As You Like It
Running until Saturday, May 12th, Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts presents the iconic Shakespearean comedy As You Like It. The play is directed by SU Drama chair Ralph Zito and features SU Drama students in its roles. The play is also super affordable starting at just $16. It’s a way to support the future stars of theatre. For audiences it’s entertainment, but for drama students this is an opportunity to further hone their acting skills. If you love theatre you should definitely check it out!

One very cool place to check out the work of current well-known artists is The Warehouse Gallery. I’ve featured Warehouse exhibitions in the past–Deng Guo Yuan for instance (now closed). I’m always very impressed with the exhibit selections but feel like people in the Syracuse community may be overlooking this awesome local art gallery. It’s not just for SU students, after all. The newest site-specific art installation is called Inner Water by Japanese artist Noriko Ambe in her first solo US show.

Coming this Thursday, March 8th to The Westcott Theater is the UKF Spring U.S. Tour. If you’re not sure exactly what that is, well I’ll tell you. It represents one of the few authentic British dubstep concert tours to enter the States. While artists like Skrillex are defining a new niche of dubstep and even mainstream pop artists are dipping into the sound, dubstep was actually born in the UK.

It’s been another excellent season at Syracuse Stage. I’ve heard great things about Caroline, or Change and am excited for next month’s 2010 Tony Award winning Red. Many are familiar with Mark Rothko and his amazing Abstract Expressionist work (especially his “multiforms”) but fewer are aware that a unique play was written in his honor. Some may wonder how exciting a play about a painter can be but Rothko’s work is so full of emotion that he’s actually a perfect choice.

Recess Coffee House & Roastery, a very cool spot in ‘Cuse just off Westcott Street is on the brink of celebrating their 5th year in business and is throwing a huge, Alto Cinco-catered party featuring seven bands to mark the occasion. The event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. this Friday, December 23rd and won’t stop rocking until 1:00 a.m. Spark Contemporary Art Space and Badlands (1005-1007 Fayette Street) is hosting the party and based on the information I’ve already provided, sounds like one hell of a night.

Many people have probably noticed the gated off streets and odd assortment of inflatables set up today in Armory Square. Some may be asking themselves, “whaaaat is this?” Well here’s your answer. Cartoon Network’s wildly popular late-night block of comically deranged shows called Adult Swim is hosting the Adult Swim Block Party. This year’s event has been touring 10 college towns, bringing live music, whacked-out carnival type games, prizes and booths representing a selection of Adult Swim’s lineup including Children’s Hospital and (my personal favorite) Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

After leaving the Whitman School of Management at SU I followed my passion for English literature and writing. I was always pulled in the direction of writing but felt pressured to “go where the money is”. I tried to force my way through accounting, finance and a bunch of other things I hated. I’ll always remember the day I returned to SU as a student in English & Textual Studies.

Going on now until October 16th, don’t miss The Turn of the Screw at Syracuse Stage (Buy Tickets). The play is adapted from an 1898 Henry James novella of the same name. The novella is steeped in elements of the Gothic genre which can be seen in it’s fascination with old, mysterious buildings and supernatural themes. While we can’t strictly call it either a psychological thriller or ghost story it falls somewhere in between.
