CSA Fair: Sign Up This Weekend!
Because I haven’t really touched on the great Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) opportunities in Syracuse, I figured I’d tell you a little about CSA and mention the Syracuse Area CSA Fair going on this Saturday, March 10th at 11:00 a.m. It’s an opportunity to talk with local farmers, learn about CSA and decide which one is right for you. While many know what CSA is, there are plenty who don’t–so here’s a quick primer on the topic and why you might want to consider it this season.
Read MoreLemon Grass: A Guru Review.
There are very few places to get Thai food in the entire Syracuse area but there is definitely one place that holds the crown as the best. Being a lover of extremely hot foods from all Asian food cultures, Thai cuisine has always fascinated me. Maybe not quite as much as Vietnamese classics like pho (take that, SOPA) but it’s very close to the top of my list. There’s something about lemon grass (the spice) that gets me every time–the biting, zesty lemon flavor and aroma works wonders in dishes like Tom Yum (Thai hot and sour soup).

One of the newest and coolest places to open in Downtown Syracuse is Cafe Kubal’s amazing third store. The brand–which started at the James Street location–has found success as a unique Syracuse business, roasting and serving up some of the finest coffee in town, much of it organic and/or fair trade. Coffee lovers from across Syracuse recognize the name and have yet another location to grab a cup (or better yet grab a cup, sit down and relax).

Recess Coffee House & Roastery, a very cool spot in ‘Cuse just off Westcott Street is on the brink of celebrating their 5th year in business and is throwing a huge, Alto Cinco-catered party featuring seven bands to mark the occasion. The event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. this Friday, December 23rd and won’t stop rocking until 1:00 a.m. Spark Contemporary Art Space and Badlands (1005-1007 Fayette Street) is hosting the party and based on the information I’ve already provided, sounds like one hell of a night.

Being ever vigilant in my search for new ways to consume alcohol, I discovered Wolaver’s Organic Pumpkin Ale ($9.99/six pack) at Wegman’s today. You may remember one of my early posts on another of Wolaver’s brews, but this one is way better and more importantly, brewed with Vermont pumpkins! Not only that, but the pumpkins are organically grown less than twenty miles from the Vermont brewery.

Putting one of the coolest experiences of my summer into less than 500 words was not easy, but here’s my best shot. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Maines corporate chef and beekeeper Eamon Lee in a behind the scenes look at the fascinating world of beekeeping and local honey.
Read MoreLocal Garlic: An Aficionado’s Guide
Before I became an initiate into the secret world of garlic I always assumed the bulbous herb was only good for three things: as an antioxidant, to wreck your breath and to stop those vampires. It wasn’t until I met local garlic aficionado and Good Karma Garlic Patch (Jordan, NY) owner Marty Hanscomb at the Skaneateles Farmer’s Market that I realized I was only scratching the surface.

Interested in buying your produce local and organic without the danger of being run down by a shopping cart? Then head out to the Skaneateles Farmer’s Market at Austin Park on Jordan Street. At first arrival, I was sort of shocked by how small the market was, about 10-15 tents sporting local produce, meat and cheese.
