Syracuse Opera’s Carmina Burana Reviewed.

After mentioning various Syracuse Opera productions over the past six months I finally got a chance to see one. It came in the form of the epic and famous 1935-6 Orff cantata called Carmina Burana. I talked about it in a previous article, and since the Opera was nice enough to allow me access as a member of the press (thing’s are getting interesting for the Guru), I promised a review. By no means am I some sort of opera expert and I won’t claim to be, but I think you’ll be interested to hear thoughts from an opera virgin.

Agenda 12/16: Joe Driscoll at King of Clubs

One of my favorite low-key bars in Armory Square, King of Clubs is hosting a concert featuring local rapper and multi-talented musician Joe Driscoll. He will perform his signature style of hip-hop, which borders on too many genres to even describe. One minute you think your hearing reggae, then it’s folk, but in the next minute it changes to full on hip-hop. I saw him for the first time last week at Empire Brewing Company and the bar was packed for his show.

Fall Music Favorite: Freelance Whales

I like to think I’ve developed pretty good music taste over my 25 years–enough to recommend one of the most perfect fall albums that I just can’t stop listening to. The band is called Freelance Whales and the album is called Weathervanes. Even though it dropped back in April 2010 you’ll be bumping it in your headphones, car and at home nonstop (I do anyway).

Fall Music Primer Part I: The Concerts That Matter

After a painful summer drought for Syracuse concert lovers, devotees and freaks fall brings a devastating lineup of trance, electronica and even a little acoustic funk and folk rock. Almost as a natural compensation for the dying foliage and greying skies (yes, it’s coming), the Westcott Theater (among others) is bringing world-class talent that will put some vibrancy into the fast approaching fall.
