Famous Artists Theatre Presents: Young Frankenstein
Syracuse’s own Famous Artists Broadway Theatre recently released it’s 2012-2013 season featuring shows like Jersey Boys, The Adams Family and others but coming up very soon is Mel Brooks’ comedy/musical Young Frankenstein. There are three performances coming up including Tuesday, May 15 through Thursday, May 17–all at 7:30 p.m. If you’ve ever seen The Producers or laughed at any of Mel Brooks’ completely absurd but hilarious films, you shouldn’t miss this show!

The Westcott Theater has been bringing so many awesome shows to Syracuse lately so I figured I’d include my top 3 picks for the next week. Here you’ll find a quick primer on the three acts as well as all the info you need to decide, listen and purchase tickets. First up is psychedelic shaman-trance called Shpongle, Russian-American rockabilly with Red Elvises and then Brooklyn-based indie-dance band Rubblebucket. It’s quite a unique list so get ready for some fun.

Opening Wednesday, April 18th, Syracuse Stage presents another brilliant piece of theatre–this time around it’s Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size. The 2011-2012 season at Syracuse Stage has been a memorable one featuring The Turn of the Screw, Red, Caroline, or Change and more. The Brothers Size is the final play of the season and looks very promising from what I’ve read. The play is of quite recent history as well–first appearing back in 2007.

One of the foremost innovators of electro-house music, Laidback Luke is throwing an almost sold out show at The Westcott on Sunday, April 15th. I’m not going to try to convince you if you aren’t a fan of electro house. I’ll be the first to admit that while the genre is becoming mainstream in a big way, it’s not for everyone. What you should know is that Laidback Luke is absolutely huge in his genre and has made a career out of remixing elements of mainstream pop and producing a crossover that is more electro-house than pop.

In the past I’ve prefaced opera articles with a bunch of reasons why it can be challenging for the uninitiated. This time I’m skipping that part because I truly believe it’s an art form you should be familiar with. The epic scale and amazing plots of the opera canon initially attracted me, but the even more epic music is what really got me. I think you’ll get that impression from my Carmina Burana review. So without further ado, I’m proud to present this feature on Syracuse Opera’s Madama Butterfly. Enjoy!

Coming this Thursday, March 8th to The Westcott Theater is the UKF Spring U.S. Tour. If you’re not sure exactly what that is, well I’ll tell you. It represents one of the few authentic British dubstep concert tours to enter the States. While artists like Skrillex are defining a new niche of dubstep and even mainstream pop artists are dipping into the sound, dubstep was actually born in the UK.

Whether or not you went to their last last show at Al’s, you should definitely hit up Empire Brewing Company this Friday, March 9th for a showcase of local hip-hop talent. And I’m not just saying it because I’m friends with them. ToTs, as the self-styled potato rapper brings something totally different to the stage while Illumination lays down gritty hip-hop beats and bass for him. It’s pretty cool to see them work together on stage.

There are so many awesome concerts coming up so I figured I’d highlight some of my picks. The Westcott Theater among others are setting the stage for some immensely famous acts. My main interest is electronic music so I’m sticking to that for now, and since Upstate New York is starting to seem like a destination for the genre why bother covering anything else? It’s also one of the most affordable places to catch shows. You won’t find anything much more than $55 (plus tax and fees of course). Unbeatable in my opinion.
