Sterling Stage Folk Fest 2012!
If you follow the Guru you know I’m at concerts nonstop, but lately I’ve been a little less enthused about electronic music and more into indie folk and similar genres. After catching Trampled by Turtles a few weeks back at the Westcott Theater my mind was blown. I’ve always been into all kinds of genres, but folk is becoming a mainstay of my daily listening. Like folk music? Don’t miss the 2012 Sterling Stage Folk Fest!

Concert-goers looking for something completely different and unexpected should head to The Westcott Theater this evening for a performance by Beats Antique. Many are familiar with this trio’s unique electro-infused world music, but I’m guessing few have seen them live. Beats Antique is part belly dancing, part Steampunk–blending down tempo, hip-hop, jazz, afro-beat, tango and a long list of Indian, Greek and Middle Eastern music traditions. Here’s a chance to see them live!

The Westcott Theater has been bringing so many awesome shows to Syracuse lately so I figured I’d include my top 3 picks for the next week. Here you’ll find a quick primer on the three acts as well as all the info you need to decide, listen and purchase tickets. First up is psychedelic shaman-trance called Shpongle, Russian-American rockabilly with Red Elvises and then Brooklyn-based indie-dance band Rubblebucket. It’s quite a unique list so get ready for some fun.

This Wednesday, April 25th at 8:00 p.m. another famous electro and EDM producer hits the stage at The Westcott Theater. There have been a ton of shows packed together in the last few weeks and that trend is still happening. This time it’s Felix Cartal, a young and super talented producer/punk musician hailing from Vancouver who just dropped his second album, Different Faces. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy his work and I’m stoked to see him tear it up live!

Concerts, concerts, concerts, blah, blah, blah… Well guess what? Here’s another one. The Westcott Theater hosts another long-awaited show when bluegrass, country and indie folk sensations Trampled by Turtles take the stage. This show is unlike any previous concert feature on Syracuse Guru and features a full band with actual live instruments (imagine that). Trampled by Turtles have grown tremendously popular, here’s a rare chance to experience their stripped-down, hybridized but sincere bluegrass.

One of the foremost innovators of electro-house music, Laidback Luke is throwing an almost sold out show at The Westcott on Sunday, April 15th. I’m not going to try to convince you if you aren’t a fan of electro house. I’ll be the first to admit that while the genre is becoming mainstream in a big way, it’s not for everyone. What you should know is that Laidback Luke is absolutely huge in his genre and has made a career out of remixing elements of mainstream pop and producing a crossover that is more electro-house than pop.

I recently posted about some of the great things on offer at Auburn Public Theater when it comes to movies, but here’s a post for acoustic guitar lovers. On Friday, April 13th at 8:00 p.m. virtuoso acoustic guitar duo Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb hit APT for a night of incredible music. You may have seen them recently at The Palace Theatre or bc Restaurant but in case you missed out, here’s another chance to see them live!

For anyone stumbling over the name–as I’ll admit I was–it is in fact “subtract.” This Thursday, April 5th up and coming UK DJ/producer SBTRKT takes the stage at The Westcott Theater (where else?). Current listeners have already been won over by the music’s totally unique charms and blatant genius (got the album on repeat as I write this). It’s somewhat of a departure from the artists I’ve been writing about lately, and a show that you absolutely should not miss!
