Get Ready for SyracuseFirst’s Buy Local Bash!
Coming up very soon on Monday, November 21st is SyracuseFirst’s Buy Local Bash. It’s been widely publicized but I thought I’d chime in on what it’s actually about. I’ve written about SyracuseFirst’s mission to encourage reinvestment in the Syracuse community by promoting local businesses but the Buy Local Bash is a very tangible, real world example of what the organization can do. It’s great to have a guiding ideology but action is key–SyracuseFirst has both covered.

I’ve been dying to do some articles on new business ventures and start-ups in the CNY area and I finally got my wish. My buddy and friend of the site, Kyle Bome, is working non-stop to launch his innovative e-bike business called Bome Bikes. He recently graduated from SU’s Whitman School of Management with an MBA and during his studies identified a great niche for affordable, high-tech electric bikes in the local and national market.

Starting Tuesday, November 8th and running through November 10th make sure not to miss the Syracuse stop of the 72-city tour of In The Heights. A few years ago, the Broadway hit grabbed four Tonys one of which was for Best Musical. It was a massive success on Broadway and now we have a great opportunity to catch the Lin-Manuel Miranda masterpiece at the Civic Center Theaters in downtown ‘Cuse.

So this afternoon I had the opportunity to check out the Pride of New York Harvest Fest at the New York State Fairgrounds. My photographer and I spend a few hours wandering the immense Horticulture Building, eating and talking with local food vendors and business owners–we also walked away with some pretty serious loot. In my featured article about the Harvest Fest, I talked about the number of vendors but today I was completely overwhelmed with the vast selections.

I’ve been in a very creative, artsy state of mind for the last few weeks and I thought I’d throw a great photography exhibit out there for your consideration. I’ve written about the Munson Williams Proctor Museum of Art (MWP) in Utica before, but you absolutely need to make the trip to see what I keep talking about.
Read MoreMeet Henry David Thoreau! Well, Sort of.
On Monday, November 7th one of the newest art-related centers in CNY, Auburn Public Theater, is hosting a “live history” show entitled, “An Evening with Henry David Thoreau” for just $10. It isn’t a play or movie, but a one-man-show by veteran live history actor Richard Smith.

This will require a bit of a drive but I highly recommend you head out to Utica this Thursday, November 3rd and catch classical piano group, The 5 Browns, as they perform at the beautiful Stanley Theater at 7:30 p.m. Now I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Classical music, what’s he talkin’ about?”, but this is something completely unique. The 5 Browns don’t just perform classical music, they remake it and give it new life by playing on FIVE pianos at once–and not just any pianos; they play on Steinways (only the best).

Although I’ve never been to the Pride of New York Harvest Fest, it promises to be a great time for all CNY foodies and local food fans. This year you’ll get a chance to discover wines from over twenty New York State wineries and an even longer list of local foods. You’ll find salsa, beef jerky, pasta sauce, locally-roasted coffee, local cheeses, a ton of organic selections, sweets like cookies and fudge as well as many local staples.
