Anthony’s Pasta Bar: A Guru Review
After hearing all kinds of stories about Anthony’s Pasta Bar in Hanover Square, I figured it was about time the Guru paid a visit. It was around 7:00 p.m. midweek when I finally went to the small, modern and welcoming restaurant. Hanover Square often feels so nondescript, but the black awning with “Anthony’s” scrawled in big white letters gives the spot character. Anthony’s was fairly busy–the perfect time to stop in for a review.

The nice weather’s back so I figured it was a perfect opportunity for an affordable, outdoor dinner at the iconic Liverpool hot dog joint Heid’s. For the most part, a hot dog is a hot dog but I still wanted to get a review up for you. You can’t go to Heid’s expecting more than a couple dogs, fries and maybe a birch beer (my favorite) but sometimes it just hits the spot. It’s a no frills, American dining experience that is always quite enjoyable–even though this was my first visit in about a year (thanks Foursquare).

Ever since I enjoyed an evening of traditional Spanish tapas at the fantastic Jose Garces-owned Amada in Philadelphia, I’ve been on a quest to find the real thing again. Good Spanish tapas isn’t really something you can find in ‘Cuse, but there is a place in Oneida known as Zabroso, which I’ve been eyeing for some time now. If you read my previous reviews, it’s pretty obvious that food is an obsession of mine and that I’ve no problem traveling to get it. So the other night I finally got to try Zabroso…
Read MoreGentile’s Restaurant: A Guru Review.
I’ve heard so many things about Gentile’s Restaurant but only recently had a chance to try it for myself. People seem to just love chef/owner Kevin Gentile’s eclectic Italian creations. I’ve even heard some go as far as to call it the best restaurant in Syracuse. Because I’m quite fond (and guilty) of hyperbole, it was about time for the Guru to pay a visit. Chef Gentile’s cuisine is something I’ve been waiting a long time to try and I came in with really high hopes.
Read Morebc Restaurant: A Guru Review
One Syracuse restaurant that’s been undergoing a bunch of changes lately is bc. From the revamped interior, new Fayette Street signage and tweaked menu to a new concept of identity–they’ve been hard at work. A while back I wrote an article on bc’s reopening and heard about the restaurant’s renewed attitude about food, atmosphere and more so I thought I’d go see what all that actually means when it comes to dining at bc Restaurant.
Read MoreThe Sherwood Inn: A Guru Review
As I’ve found since I started reviewing restaurants, it isn’t often that every aspect of a dining experience comes together to create something special. You often find excellent food in hole in the wall type places that haven’t been redecorated since the 70s, while some high-end, modern joints may leave you disappointed. There are very few constants in the world of restaurants, but I like to look at the entire experience when it comes to providing thoughtful reviews. This brings us to The Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles.

Fresh off of a dinner at Pallo Gallo Mexican restaurant in Fayetteville, I figured I’d provide some of my reactions in this Guru Review. In my other reviews of Mexican food in Syracuse, I’ve made it known that I’m very particular about it. I’m always on the search for the real thing, so I was happy to try Papa Gallo again. I’ve always been a fan of any and all Mexican food that utilizes seafood so I almost always order either fish tacos or a fish burrito. Luckily Papa Gallo does both–and as I found out–executes with precision when it comes to the Pescado Burrito.

To be honest, I’ve been wanting to try Koto Japanese Steakhouse since the first one opened on Erie Boulevard. As a sushi addict there are only a few places I enjoy in Syracuse so I was banking on Koto to help me out. Known for a huge menu of unique sushi rolls, classics and a surprising amount of Japanese cuisine including full hibachi, I was pretty excited to eat there two nights ago, albeit at Carousel Mall. “Why not?” I thought, as mouth-watering aromas wafted into the mall food court (that’s probably a first).
