The Ballerina Project: Tech Garden Art
Tonight marks the start of a new art exhibition at The Tech Garden in downtown ‘Cuse. It’s called The Ballerina Project and features images of ballerinas posing in front of various local architecture and structures. The artist behind the exhibit is Kay Lavonier and The Ballerina Project is her first solo exhibition. It’s another chance to see an art exhibit that highlights the uniqueness of the CNY region–specifically Syracuse, which is a major goal of The Tech Garden itself.

There’s no denying that Syracuse and the greater Upstate New York area played host to major events in history. Whether you look at women’s suffrage or abolitionism, the Underground Railroad, our history as the 19th century’s largest US salt producer or even the Erie Canal it is quite obvious that CNY played a major role in the development of America as we understand it today. One thing I tend to forget is the sheer number of inventions that originated here, and that’s what Patently Syracuse is all about.

One very cool place to check out the work of current well-known artists is The Warehouse Gallery. I’ve featured Warehouse exhibitions in the past–Deng Guo Yuan for instance (now closed). I’m always very impressed with the exhibit selections but feel like people in the Syracuse community may be overlooking this awesome local art gallery. It’s not just for SU students, after all. The newest site-specific art installation is called Inner Water by Japanese artist Noriko Ambe in her first solo US show.

The Munson Williams Proctor Museum of Art might be a hike for most Central New Yorkers, but it seems to me that it is also undeniably one of the best museums around. Whoever makes the decisions on MWP exhibits is clearly a cut above the rest. With a long, storied history in the Utica area, MWP’s long list of past exhibits is just as impressive as the museum’s permanent collection. Past exhibits include virtually every art form, delving into the world of decorative arts, daguerreotypes and even Dada.

Many are familiar with Mark Rothko and his amazing Abstract Expressionist work (especially his “multiforms”) but fewer are aware that a unique play was written in his honor. Some may wonder how exciting a play about a painter can be but Rothko’s work is so full of emotion that he’s actually a perfect choice.
