January Jazzfest is back for 2013 with a great lineup of local jazz at Mohegan Manor. The event is on Sunday, January 27th and kicks off at 1:00 p.m. January Jazzfest is the annual fundraiser for CNY Jazz Central and features gourmet food, drink, and music on multiple floors of the manor. It includes The Tony Monaco Quintet with Cookie Coogan, LuBossa, the Syracuse Blues Fest “SOS” Blues Band, and many others. Jazz lovers and those just looking for a pleasant Sunday afternoon filled with great food and music really ought to consider this one!
I always say that I prefer 60s jazz, but the truth is that when I hear any jazz live I find myself liking it. For example, the James Carter Organ Trio (coming to Syracuse soon) is about as contemporary as you can get, but their live sets are just incredible. Aside from Jazzfest at OCC (or Jamesville Beach), there aren’t so many chances to see multiple jazz musicians at one event, but CNY Jazz Central really puts the pieces together when it comes to January Jazzfest. The historical setting of Mohegan Manor combined with access to great wine, and even some pretty tasty sushi–not to mention four floors of music–makes this fundraiser a complete stand-out in CNY. As always the fest includes a silent auction and raffle to further help fund the work of CNY Jazz Central.
CNY Jazz Central is a local organization that runs scholastic and public jazz-oriented programs in and around Syracuse. Yearly CNY Jazz puts on around 150 scholastic and public events. They provide the Summer Jazz Workshop and the Scholastic Jazz Jam to high school students. They also train jazz students and offer master classes. I firmly believe that the arts encourage academic and personal growth and we’re lucky to have an organization so committed to enriching musical education, which is an oft-threatened institution.
