The nice weather’s back so I figured it was a perfect opportunity for an affordable, outdoor dinner at the iconic Liverpool hot dog joint Heid’s. For the most part, a hot dog is a hot dog but I still wanted to get a review up for you. You can’t go to Heid’s expecting more than a couple dogs, fries and maybe a birch beer (my favorite) but sometimes it just hits the spot. It’s a no frills, American dining experience that is always quite enjoyable–even though this was my first visit in about a year (thanks Foursquare).
The first ever “Cuse Mob” location was finally revealed today! It’s Craft Chemistry. Craft Chemistry is a totally unique store based in the ‘Cuse located on 745 North Salina Street (Directions). It’s an independent art boutique and small gallery showcasing contemporary handmade wares and exhibits by CNY artists. For more info about Cuse Mob and how to participate, click here!
I don’t know about you but I won’t be happy with the local food scene until I can order giant plates of boiled cray(craw?)fish with all the fixins. Unfortunately this will probably never happen so the only other option is an expensive trip to Louisiana, which I won’t be taking anytime soon. But crawfish lovers rejoice, the Crawfish Festival is back featuring a “Taste of Louisiana”–crawfish, corn, potatoes and sausage on one huge platter!
Coming up in a few weeks is the sixth annual Downtown Living Tour. This tour is brought to you by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse and is happening on Saturday, May 19th from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It’s a great chance to experience some of the most upscale living downtown Syracuse has to offer. This year’s Downtown Living Tour has ten stops and showcases many great condominiums, lofts and upscale apartments. Whether you’re in the market or just curious, you should check it out!
Ever heard of a Cash Mob? Yes, no, maybe? What about a Cuse Mob? Well it’s the coolest new trend to hit Syracuse thanks to my friends over at SyracuseFirst. The concept is simple; arrange a large group (via Twitter/Facebook) to “mob” a selected business with customers in one quick burst. A price point per customer is decided upon–usually $10–and each person spends that amount. It’s a way of including everyone in the support of a vital local business while providing a revenue spike for the business.
The Westcott Theater has been bringing so many awesome shows to Syracuse lately so I figured I’d include my top 3 picks for the next week. Here you’ll find a quick primer on the three acts as well as all the info you need to decide, listen and purchase tickets. First up is psychedelic shaman-trance called Shpongle, Russian-American rockabilly with Red Elvises and then Brooklyn-based indie-dance band Rubblebucket. It’s quite a unique list so get ready for some fun.
Running until Saturday, May 12th, Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts presents the iconic Shakespearean comedy As You Like It. The play is directed by SU Drama chair Ralph Zito and features SU Drama students in its roles. The play is also super affordable starting at just $16. It’s a way to support the future stars of theatre. For audiences it’s entertainment, but for drama students this is an opportunity to further hone their acting skills. If you love theatre you should definitely check it out!
I’ve been stuck on concerts a bit lately but here’s something for the foodies. This event is somewhat similar to SavorSyracuse, which you can read about here, but coming up on Friday, May 18th at 6:00 p.m. the Wegman’s-hosted Taste of Success kicks off featuring over 125 international and New York State wines, the finest in craft beer as well as gourmet hors d’oeuvres selected and prepared by Wegmans Regional Executive Chef Bob Langkammerer and his team.
