Sled For RED: AIDS Fundraiser.

Just wanted to share a fun way to contribute to a very important cause. The CNY organization AIDS Community Resources is putting on their Second Annual Sled for RED on Saturday, January 21st at 5:00 p.m. The event, which is hosted at Four Seasons Golf and Ski Center in Fayetteville includes a sledding derby, discounts on tubing as well as local food, beer samples and hot chocolate to warm up post-race. New this time around is a heated tent, live music and even a flat screen so you don’t miss SU’s big game against Notre Dame. It sounds like a fun night and great way to make the best of winter while raising money for AIDS Community Resources.

While it may be somewhat late to enter a team and raise the $250 fundraising minimum, I’m sure some may be able to achieve it. Basically you arrange a team of up to five people. You pick the pilot and a name then build your sled from scratch. There are a number of rules–sled construction can only involve cardboard, duct tape, masking tape, scotch tape and paint. You cannot use plastics of any kind or industrial pressed cardboard. You’re also not allowed to use wood or any adhesives besides the tape varieties I mentioned. The derby starts up at 5:00 p.m. when you’ll be able to witness some custom-build cardboard sledding–and probably destruction.

To register you either need to create a fundraising page, call (800) 475-2430 or shoot an email to events@aidscommunityresources.com. If you’re interested, act as soon as possible. If you aren’t planning on setting up a team here are the other options with links to each ticket level, via AIDS Community Resources:

ADRENALINE JUNKY
Go tubing after the derby at a discounted price of $10.

BENCH WARMER
Watch and enjoy samplings of delicious food and beverages for only $10.

As I mentioned it’s hosted at Four Seasons Golf and Ski Center in Fayetteville, which features an awesome tubing hill with a conveyor that pulls you back up to the start. No more climbing up the hill, which maximizes the fun (while removing the hike) of tubing–luckily there’s finally some snow. It’s a very cool place to bring the kids on winter weekends. They offer day passes for $23 and season passes at $145/person. It’s one of the most fun Syracuse winter activities–a great chance to have the thrill of downhill skiing without the high prices of equipment or the learning curve presented to younger children. Go check it out if you haven’t.
