Oysters & Kilts at Kitty Hoynes.

This Friday & Saturday the most authentic Irish pub in Syracuse, also known as Kitty Hoynes, is having what they describe as a “Best Legs in a Kilt Competition” featuring a raw bar with shrimp, clams and my most severe addiction, oysters on the half-shell. As you know from reading my recommendations, my favorite topic to write on (among other things) is specific edibles, drinks and local delicacies. While raw oysters certainly aren’t (I hope anyway) a local delicacy, they trump all things palatable as my opined ‘most perfect food item’, period. It isn’t so often that you can get them, so whenever I get a chance I’m willing to finish any number of Wellfleet’s or Wegman’s-featured Gerrish Island oysters put before me.

Something else unique on offering this weekend is a limited Harpoon “100 Barrel Series” stout called Island Creek Oyster Stout. As I’m just finding out, there is a long held Massachusetts tradition of pairing local oysters with stouts and even more surprising, this limited edition Harpoon stout is actually brewed with Duxbury Bay, MA oysters. I’ve never had it but I’m absolutely ecstatic to try one (or 5). From what I’ve read the oceany, mineral notes that constitute the classic oyster punch mingle with dark roasted malts and the hop’s bite perfectly.

Check out Kitty Hoyne’s Friday and Saturday starting at 9:00 p.m. Tell your friends and head on down to the Armory for an absolutely perfect way to start the night. Be sure to get there early and grab as many $1 oysters as you can, they will go quick. Also if you’ve got a competitive streak, grab your best kilt; you may leave with a trophy to go with that post-oyster satisfaction.
