It seems like The Food Network and The Travel Channel have taken a recent interest in Central New York. You may recall that Man v. Food made a stop at several local establishments, including Mother’s Cupboard. Well, over the summer Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins & Dives and host Guy Fieri paid a visit to six local restaurants as well as the Great New York State Fair. My friends at Kitty Hoynes were one of the chosen few and they’re throwing a screening party on Monday, November 12th to celebrate!
To anyone who isn’t familiar (how?), Kitty Hoynes is an excellent local Irish pub and restaurant serving the best Irish fare in Syracuse. It’s not surprising that host Guy Fieri and The Food Network picked Hoynes. On Monday, November 12th at 10:00 p.m. Kitty Hoynes (among others) will be featured on the extremely popular Food Network hit show. D3 generally only features three obvious choices–diners, drive-ins, or dives–but still, Hoynes made the list. Why? Because it’s an amazing and underrated Syracuse culinary gem.
Fieri joined Head Chef Damien Brownlow in cooking up a few specialty items from scratch in Hoynes kitchen. While Kitty Hoynes has all the classics (fish and chips, etc.) the restaurant also serves some very unique ‘re-thinkings’ of classic Irish cuisine, and that’s what they do best. A restaurant all the way up in Central New York grabbing the attention of a show like Diners, Drive-ins & Dives is a pretty remarkable feat. It’s a testament not only to Kitty Hoynes but also something all Syracusans can be proud of. In my many experiences at Kitty Hoynes it’s quite apparent that Chef Damien Brownlow is working hard to create home cooking using the finest ingredients. Go try the fish and chips if you want proof.
I’ve got the inside scoop on the featured items for the November 12th D3 episode entitled, “Turn on Traditional.”
It’s a Guru exclusive:
- Reuben fritters: corned beef brisket, Swiss cheese, cream cheese, sauerkraut with a honey, horseradish wholegrain mustard dipping sauce.
- Lamb burger: topped with sautéed mushrooms, Cashel bleu Irish farmhouse cheese and crispy onion straws with a side of Irish country tomato relish or Head Chef Damien’s homemade Guinness Stout wholegrain mustard.
- Irish meatloaf: ground beef, lamb and crispy Irish white pudding topped with Irish cabbage cream sauce served with Champ mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables.
To celebrate this great honor, Kitty Hoynes is throwing a special screening party. Kitty Hoynes will have its standard trivia night but this time there will be a red carpet entrance, hors d’oeuvres, a special tasting and much more. At 10:00 p.m. the brand new Diners, Drive-ins & Dives will be screened on several large HDTVs and possibly a projection screen or similar setup. There will also be a food drive for the local food pantry.
I definitely recommend coming out for this special party; it’s not often that Syracuse catches the attention of a hit television show. All are welcome.
