Conspirator at The Westcott Theater!

Philadelphia-based electronic group Conspirator is coming to The Westcott Theater this Saturday, November 10th at 9:00 p.m. Conspirator is one of the few live electronic groups I’ve never seen (at the Westcott or otherwise) and I’m excited to check them out. Many concerts fall midweek but luckily this great act happened to land on the weekend, so I’m sure the theater will be busy and full of excitement. Conspirator tours widely–they hit Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, Liberate Festival, and others this summer alone–but for now, they’re in the ‘Cuse!

Fans of jam band music will recognize the names Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of Disco Biscuits fame. The two, along with DJ Omen, founded Conspirator back in ’04 as an outlet for creativity in electronic genres. Brownstein and Magner are the mainstays, but the touring band has taken on many different forms. As I’ve just confirmed KJ Sawa of Pendulum fame, Mike Greenfield of Lotus, and drummer Darren Shearer of The New Deal are members for the 2012 tour. Those are huge names across a good chunk of popular live electronic music and they’re all coming together for one amazing night. Pendulum, Lotus, and New Deal represented at one show! No wonder Conspirator moves effortlessly from live dubstep, to house, to drum and bass all with a funky, bluesy, jam band sensibility. If you’ve seen EOTO, Lotus, or Sound Tribe Sector 9 before, you already know what I’m talking about. If not, you really need to see Conspirator in action.

One thing I’d like to get across is that this is not a DJ set or similar performance, but a FULL BAND playing live electronica. It’s more akin to rock ‘n roll or psychedelic rock in its sound and blends intense guitar screams with heavy bass and mesmerizing melody. What I’m saying is that fans of jazz, blues, rock, electro, house music, and even drum and bass will love this show. Conspirator has the raw intensity of a techno or dubstep DJ set AND the fluidity of a rock show. The difference? You have real musicians playing on actual instruments. My point: no one should be put off by the electronic roots of Conspirator, because it’s backed up by world class drummers and guitar virtuosos.

Local producer/DJ Pax Effex and Boombox opens for Conspirator. Doors at 8:00 p.m. This fantastic show comprising members of the best groups in live electronica (Lotus, New Deal) and UK drum and bass (Pendulum) is only $20. You can find tickets on the link below or at Sound Garden in Armory Square. It’s definitely worth your time.
