Aziz Ansari will perform his signature stand-up comedy routine at the Onondaga County War Memorial on April 13th at 8:00 p.m. While many may know him from movies like Funny People, I became a fan back in 2005 when he starred in a number of hilarious short films. This early work he did with fellow comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel later became MTV’s Human Giant. You may have seen their first series called Shutterbugs, which featured Ansari, Huebel and Sheer as a child talent agents or the spoof on magician Criss Angel called Illusionators. Both are very funny, containing Aziz Ansari’s comedic style of saying the last thing anyone would possibly expect. He is wildly unpredictable and he has carved out his own lane in stand-up and sketch comedy by staying true to this style.
Besides the short films (one featuring Zach Galifianakis) and Human Giant, Ansari hosted the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, appeared on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and even appeared in Jay-Z and Kanye West’s music video for “Otis”. At age 28 these are some amazing accomplishments, but it doesn’t stop there–he also made big moves in Hollywood. Appearing in The Rocker, Funny People, I Love You, Man, Get Him to the Greek and more, it’s amazing how quickly his career has exploded. Currently he plays Tom Haverford on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, for which he’s been critically acclaimed.
While I’m not as interested in his Hollywood and big network stuff, Ansari still has that unpredictable edge to his character that makes him effortlessly entertaining. Because his 2005 era work was often unscripted or sketch-based, Ansari shines in his stand-up comedy roles. You can expect a hilarious show in April. If you’re familiar with his over-the-top, idiotic ‘bro’ character called Randy, which ended up in Funny People (the only good part), you might have a sense of what to expect. Skip Tosh and Kevin Hart–Ansari’s a far better comedian.
So if you’re interested in seeing one of the youngest and funniest comedy stars I highly suggest you get tickets now. This is bound to sell out although I’ve seen some tickets still available.
