Today at 2:00 p.m. Frank Malfitano, Executive Director of the M&T Jazz Fest, announced the 2013 lineup for this great, annual event. The 31st Jazz Fest will return to the pleasant shores of Jamesville Beach Park once again, where an exciting collection of artists from across jazz, funk, rock, and more will play. Headlining this year are… The Doobie Brothers, Taylor Dayne, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Yellowjackets, The Grandmothers of Invention, Kat Wright, and more! A great local funk band by the name of Sophistafunk will also play. Jazz Fest goes for three days–Thursday, July 4th through Saturday, July 6th. On the 4th you can catch free fireworks and thanks to Jazz Fest sponsor M&T Bank, admission is 100% FREE!
To me Jazz Fest is perhaps the best summer festival in CNY. Frank Malfitano and the crew behind the Fest work hard to bring excellent, world-class performers to Syracuse while also supporting the music they love so much. And since Jazz Fest has always been free, this event is truly about the music–pure and simple. I’ve been to a few shows from the OCC Legends of Jazz Series, which Frank also runs and can say I’ve seen some amazing stuff. The James Carter Organ Trio and music industry veteran Jose Feliciano were fantastic shows and performances Syracuse wouldn’t have seen without Mr. Malfitano. I always say that Syracuse is amazingly rich when it comes to our people and Frank is just one of many examples of inspired locals making big things happen locally. I’m glad to call him a friend and more than happy to give my Guru Guarantee on his many projects.
Many locals head to Jazz Fest every single year, but if you’ve never been, are visiting, or are new to ‘Cuse–you gotta make the trip to Jazz Fest. Jazz Fest was formerly located at OCC, but based on last year I think Jamesville Beach is actually a much more pleasant venue. Over the Fest’s many years some of the biggest names in not only jazz, but also blues, funk, and even psychedelic rock (Donovan last year for example) have performed. There are some huge names this year, but The Doobie Brothers alone would make Jazz Fest worth your time. It’s also great to see a nod to local music in Sophistafunk’s inclusion this year!
I’ll have the full schedule for you soon, but for now here’s the full list:
- The Doobie Brothers
- Taylor Dayne
- Preservation Hall Jazz Band
- The Yellowjackets
- The Grandmothers of Invention
- Brubeck Brothers Quartet
- Ronnie Laws
- Kat Wright & the Indomitable Soul Band
