Datsik at The Westcott Theater

A few months back the much anticipated Datsik concert was cancelled due to issues at The Westcott Theater. Well good news because he’s coming back very soon! On Tuesday, January 15th Datsik is bringing Rockstar Energy’s Firepower Tour to Syracuse. Door’s open at 8:00 p.m. with openers Griz and Reckoil. If you’re a dubstep aficionado, you definitely need to head to this show. If you bought tickets for the cancelled October show, those same tickets will get you in the door.

Datsik is a Canadian dubstep/brostep producer who’s only been in the game for a few years. His first release came in 2009 with fellow producers Downlink, Excision and Flux Pavilion, two of whom played the Westcott before. Datsik also has a number of remixes of groups like Wu-Tang Clan, Coldplay, rapper Lil’ Wayne, and MGMT. From the very early days of Datsik’s career his sound was very dark, aggressive, and vaguely metallic or mechanical sounding. “Mechanical” is a very apt way to describe the Datsik sound. His early work sounded almost industrial with strange gear-like sounds and robotic clangs. It may not always be the most pleasant sounding but its complexity is undeniable. Like all dubstep artists, Datsik relies heavily on “wobble”–or low frequency oscillation–but his version is very distinct.  Datsik’s grimy, distorted wobble is unique to him. While wobble generally doesn’t engage the lower range of bass frequency, his does. That means a darker, deeper, atmospheric and interesting sound. It’s also layered and layered beyond standard dubstep. It’s not for everybody, but that hasn’t stopped Datsik from capturing fans everywhere.

For an example of his old style, check out the song entitled “Havoc” from 2010. See video below. Datsik’s newest release, Vitamin D, introduces a much more dance-friendly sound that still occasionally dips into the hard dubstep sound he started with. Personally I prefer his old, minimal stuff back when dubstep was more well-defined–maybe purer–but he certainly has done a good job transitioning while still holding onto the original sound.

Dubstep and brostep fans need to go to this show! There hasn’t been much EDM in Syracuse lately.

Here’s another EDM show you gotta see!
