‘Cuse Street Food: El Greko Traditional Gyros To Go.
Had a chance to stop by El Greko (629 West Fayette) to chat with my friend Demetrios Tsimis and enjoy an incredibly good, downright gourmet gyro. Tsimis is the visionary behind the tiny, authentic Greek to-go spot (essentially a large grill and a tent) that you may have noticed last year when it was operating out of The Redhouse’s small parking lot. Well now he’s struck out on his own–grabbing up a prime location on West Fayette Street.

Because I haven’t really touched on the great Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) opportunities in Syracuse, I figured I’d tell you a little about CSA and mention the Syracuse Area CSA Fair going on this Saturday, March 10th at 11:00 a.m. It’s an opportunity to talk with local farmers, learn about CSA and decide which one is right for you. While many know what CSA is, there are plenty who don’t–so here’s a quick primer on the topic and why you might want to consider it this season.

The dedicated team at bc Restaurant was hard at work on their renovation project when I stopped by to chat with managing partner Ellen Leahy. As some of you may know, the restaurant closed down for what they’ve termed as a “face lift”–updating decor, installing an absolutely huge hardwood floor, organizing back of house and even tweaking the very materials on which the new, improved menu will be printed on.

One of the newest and coolest places to open in Downtown Syracuse is Cafe Kubal’s amazing third store. The brand–which started at the James Street location–has found success as a unique Syracuse business, roasting and serving up some of the finest coffee in town, much of it organic and/or fair trade. Coffee lovers from across Syracuse recognize the name and have yet another location to grab a cup (or better yet grab a cup, sit down and relax).

By now you all know that I love Kitty Hoyne’s so I just couldn’t help writing this quick feature. Known for excellent and authentic Irish fare and frequent specialty beer features, the downtown pub is hosting a 6-course dinner in celebration of this season’s arrival of Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale. It’s on Wednesday, December 7th starting at 6:30 p.m.

If you’re anything like me, you know that the condiments are often more important that the actual food. Being a lover of Mexican food and Asian cuisine of all origins, you begin to grow an affinity for the extra elements that make the meal something memorable. For me, whatever I’m eating is always a potential “condiment delivery system” and I’ll tell you what–the obsession for salsas, hot sauce and other various ways to liven up a snack grows stronger by the day.

Coming up very soon on Monday, November 21st is SyracuseFirst’s Buy Local Bash. It’s been widely publicized but I thought I’d chime in on what it’s actually about. I’ve written about SyracuseFirst’s mission to encourage reinvestment in the Syracuse community by promoting local businesses but the Buy Local Bash is a very tangible, real world example of what the organization can do. It’s great to have a guiding ideology but action is key–SyracuseFirst has both covered.
