Sterling Stage Folk Fest 2012!

If you follow the Guru you know I’m at concerts nonstop, but lately I’ve been a little less enthused about electronic music and more into indie folk and similar genres. After catching Trampled by Turtles a few weeks back at the Westcott Theater my mind was blown. I’ve always been into all kinds of genres, but folk is becoming a mainstay of my daily listening. Like folk music? Don’t miss the 2012 Sterling Stage Folk Fest!

MWPAI Presents: Shadow of the Sphinx

Coming up in June at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute is a excellent Egypt-centric exhibit called Shadow of the Sphinx. It doesn’t begin until Sunday, June 17th but I wanted to give Guru readers a sneak peak of what’s coming up. I’ve covered many of the great past exhibits at Utica’s MWPAI but this looks like it will top anything previous. I’ve been intrigued with ancient Egypt since age five and I think many share a similar sentiment.

May 18th is Bike to Work Day!

This Friday, May 18th is Bike to Work Day; a nationally recognized annual holiday celebrated on the third Friday in May. I don’t think I really need to explain it beyond that–(1) get your bike and (2) ride said bike to work. That’s it. With more and more attention being placed on bike lanes in Syracuse, this is a great way to support a growing local movement. It supports the environment, saves on fuel costs and provides an opportunity for some much-needed exercise.

Cuse Mob: A Buy Local Movement

Ever heard of a Cash Mob? Yes, no, maybe? What about a Cuse Mob? Well it’s the coolest new trend to hit Syracuse thanks to my friends over at SyracuseFirst. The concept is simple; arrange a large group (via Twitter/Facebook) to “mob” a selected business with customers in one quick burst. A price point per customer is decided upon–usually $10–and each person spends that amount. It’s a way of including everyone in the support of a vital local business while providing a revenue spike for the business.

Taste of Success: Hillside Fundraiser

I’ve been stuck on concerts a bit lately but here’s something for the foodies. This event is somewhat similar to SavorSyracuse, which you can read about here, but coming up on Friday, May 18th at 6:00 p.m. the Wegman’s-hosted Taste of Success kicks off featuring over 125 international and New York State wines, the finest in craft beer as well as gourmet hors d’oeuvres selected and prepared by Wegmans Regional Executive Chef Bob Langkammerer and his team.

Patently Syracuse: Last Chance!

There’s no denying that Syracuse and the greater Upstate New York area played host to major events in history. Whether you look at women’s suffrage or abolitionism, the Underground Railroad, our history as the 19th century’s largest US salt producer or even the Erie Canal it is quite obvious that CNY played a major role in the development of America as we understand it today. One thing I tend to forget is the sheer number of inventions that originated here, and that’s what Patently Syracuse is all about.

MFA 2012 at the SUArt Galleries

I follow events at the SUArt Galleries on a weekly basis, always checking back constantly. Here’s a great event if you’re interested in seeing the work of the outgoing graduate students of the 2012 MFA class in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This is a full gallery event featuring 22 grad student artists as they wind down their studies at my alma mater. This is the last gallery exhibit of a new, young and talented generation of artists before they make an impact on art scenes across the globe.
