Agenda 12/16: Joe Driscoll at King of Clubs
One of my favorite low-key bars in Armory Square, King of Clubs is hosting a concert featuring local rapper and multi-talented musician Joe Driscoll. He will perform his signature style of hip-hop, which borders on too many genres to even describe. One minute you think your hearing reggae, then it’s folk, but in the next minute it changes to full on hip-hop. I saw him for the first time last week at Empire Brewing Company and the bar was packed for his show.

I know I’ve featured Vinomania’s wine tasting event before but they always find a way to innovate week to week. So here’s another one. Along with a large selection of wine to sample you’ll get to try local Stony Brook Oils and Dutch Girl Cheese. I’m always interested in finding and trying great local products. Luckily for us Central New Yorkers, we have an absolutely endless supply of delicious, locally produced stuff.

There’s always something ultra cheap and cool going on at The Palace Theatre on James Street and this event is no exception. This Friday, October 28th the local, independent movie theater (with the best popcorn in town) is having a double feature of two great, classic horror movies. For $10 you get to see both: the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a film adaptation from the British rock musical of the same name as well as the original 1931 Frankenstein adaptation from the Mary Shelley novel (Frankenstein, 1818), staring Boris Karloff.

Many people have probably noticed the gated off streets and odd assortment of inflatables set up today in Armory Square. Some may be asking themselves, “whaaaat is this?” Well here’s your answer. Cartoon Network’s wildly popular late-night block of comically deranged shows called Adult Swim is hosting the Adult Swim Block Party. This year’s event has been touring 10 college towns, bringing live music, whacked-out carnival type games, prizes and booths representing a selection of Adult Swim’s lineup including Children’s Hospital and (my personal favorite) Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

This Friday, October 3rd Vinomania is hosting a FREE wine and cheese tasting. The event is held in the store on Pearl Street hosted by owner and wine expert Gary Decker. I was at the last wine tasting and it is an absolutely perfect way to unwind from the workday (it’s way more fun than an happy hour). You’ll meet interesting people, sample world class wine and hopefully leave with more wine knowledge than you thought you’d ever have (and a few bottles of red).

As much as I try it isn’t often I can give you an Agenda based on exactly what I’m planning to do, but this time it happened. Today the 3-day long 2011 Utica Music and Arts Fest (UMAF) starts up featuring a list of artists so long I lost count–click here for the full list. Lots of rock, jazz, folk, blues and metal. If you find yourself not recognizing a single name on the list, just take a page from my book–as long as there’s music playing I find concerts of any kind enjoyable.

I swear I’m not living under a rock but it just dawned on me that the Syracuse Irishfest is already upon us. As usual there will be plenty of live music, vendors, dance and my favorite, copious amounts of Guinness, Harpoon and Irish whiskey!
There is one special event on Friday, September 9th, which is new this year. It’s called Taste of Ireland and features the best local Irish restaurants in town (Kitty Hoyne’s is my favorite). It starts at 12:00 p.m. in Clinton Square.

Sorry for the lull in publishing these last few days, who gets the flu in August? Anyway, I’m back!
Now some of you may know about downtown music emporium Sound Garden’s outdoor film screening series called “Flicks at the Crick” which has been going on all summer long.
