On Sunday, June 30th from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Cobblestone Valley Farm in Preble, Farmshed CNY and Slow Food CNY are hosting an organic strawberry picking party. It’s something different and Cobblestone Valley Farm is one of only a handful of certified organic strawberry growers. In addition to the strawberry harvest a huge list of vendors, restaurants, and more will be there. Local foods from many CNY farms will be on sale as well. Get the family together and take the drive to Preble this Sunday! It’s free and open to the public. In addition to all sorts of vendors, a cook-out on the farm will provide hot dogs, sausage, and more. Go enjoy some fresh country air for a change.
Farmshed CNY is a local company developing mobile and web apps that aim to bridge the gap between food producers and consumers. Last year the mobile app, Farmshed 2.0, was released with detailed info on over 1600+ local farms, farmer’s markets, and producers. While the app is a digital connection to the many great food producers in Central New York, this event is a real world example of consumers directly accessing farms. It’s great for the environment and your health to source produce and food locally, but also a major bolster when it comes to CNY farmers’ economic viability.
Slow Food CNY is the Syracuse chapter of Slow Food USA, an organizations that supports local food producers and the environment by emphasizing sustainable farming and fair labor practices, among many other things. Slow Food CNY is one of 200 chapters across the US and is a major supporter of the many locally produced food products that have appeared in past Guru articles. This u-pick organic strawberry party is a team effort between local food web company Farmshed CNY and Slow Food CNY. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about both.
This is a great opportunity to get an inside look at one of the best organic strawberry producers in the region. As I said, there are very few CNY strawberry growers that are certified organic. So whether you just want to pick some berries on a nice summer afternoon or get a first-hand look at sustainable farming, this will be fun and worthwhile.
Don’t forget all the awesome local farms, food, and product vendors!
